MISSION PROJECTS

Funded by the congregation through special donations, and general yearly pledges.

Locally in Columbus, Indiana.

Hot Meals Program:  One of six area weekday sites, FUMC serves hot meals every Monday evening to generally 70 90 people in need in the community.  Delores Niemoeller will be happy to add you to one of our teams!

Food for Fish:  For this ecumenical project, we collect around $2,500 for the purchase of food supplies and other assistance for Love Chapel to distribute to those needing help in our county.

Housing Partnerships, Inc (HPI):  This ongoing project makes quality, affordable housing available for purchase by low-income people in our area.  Contact John Revell for more information if you would like to get involved!

Ecumenical Assembly: Volunteers from FUMC give hands-on support to this cooperative effort by local churches to provide a Christian response to community social needs.  Financially, we support the administrative costs of this operation.

Volunteers in Medicine:  We support this program both financially and physically, as volunteers assist the medical needs of the working poor in Columbus.

Just Friends:  We financially support this daycare support service for families with a member who has Alzheimers disease or dementia, or families needing respite care.

For Children and Youth

Clothe-A-Child:  Underprivileged school children, generally several dozen, are taken on a shopping trip in August to purchase new school clothing.

Love-A-Child:  This scholarship program makes a difference in young lives by allowing area preschool children to attend Learning Tree School, FUMC's preschool program.

United Methodist Children's Home  (Lebanon, Indiana): We support this licensed residential home for emotional disturbed youth with a White Gift Shower at Christmas time. Visit the IUMCH web site: click here.

Work Camps:  Youth and adults travel to the Appalachians and other states to help renovate and improve the homes of disadvantaged people.

BLAST (Balancing Life After School Together): Five downtown churches sponsor this after school program for latchkey kids from Central Middle School.

Missions,
In Indiana, across the nation, and around the world

Our church is in a covenant relationship to be a Global Missions Partner of the United Methodist Church.  As we support those who share their special talents and Christian witness, we too, are in mission.

United Methodist Committee on Relief:  (UMCOR)  Whatever the crisis war, flood, fire, earthquake, refugees, and famine UMCOR joins the Red Cross and others, worldwide, to respond.  With clean water, food, supplies, health care, and economic programs, UMCOR is there to make a difference.

Volunteers in Mission:  (VIM) This district-wide program provides supplies and labor for struggling Methodist churches in southern Indiana.

Operation Classroom:  Hoosier United Methodist churches sponsor schools in Liberia and Sierra Leone, West Africa both now considered third-world countries.  Special offerings of school supplies and money are used to improve facilities and provide classroom materials.

Africa University:  Located in Zimbabwe, Southeast Africa, it is one of two Methodist institutions of higher education on the continent.  Students from over 15 countries and culturally diverse backgrounds attend.  FUMC contributed significantly to the construction of one of several dormitories in 2001-2002.

Redbird Mission:  Kentucky.  In the heart of Appalachia, FUMC supports a spiritual ministry to this poverty-stricken area.

McCurdy Mission School:  New Mexico.  This school provides quality education with a Christian emphasis on grades K-12 to Navajo Indians and Spanish-speaking youths.  The school not only ministers to these children, but also reaches out to impact the community.

Project Crossroad:  This American project aids disadvantaged areas of Virginia with housing needs.  Rev. Harry Howe, a United Methodist Missionary, has been assigned as coordinator of this project.  FUMC youth groups have gone on work camps to help with this program.

In Mexico:

Terry Henderson is an agricultural missionary who oversees the distribution of animals that help village people to increase their family income and add protein to their diet.  His wife, Muriel Henderson, works in Christian Education, assists pastors and extension agents with self-help programs for rural families, and promotes the Emmaus Walk.

In Ukraine:

We sponsor a missionary in the Ukraine chosen by the Methodist Church in that area.  Bill Lovelace works in the field of Church Development.  He is the pastor of a church in the city of Kerch.  He is also serving as District Superintendent for the southern region, which includes the Ukraine, southern Russia, and the northern part of the Caucasus.

In the Phillipines:

Janet McCarty serves as a tutorial teacher for children of missionaries.  She is a deaconess of the Methodist Church.
